MONTE-CARLO RALLY WINNER:

Loeb began the final day of the World Rally Championship qualifier, which consisted of one test, the 5.16-kilometre Power Stage, with a lead of 2m41.6s. After completing the challenging run unscathed, victory was all but assured.

Dani Sordo won an exciting battle for second in his MINI John Cooper Works WRC, the marque’s first podium on the legendary event since Rauno Aaltonen took the overall victory in 1967 in a Cooper S.

Petter Solberg bagged the final podium spot on his return to the factory Ford team after an absence of more than a decade.

LOEB WINS POWER STAGE:
Event winner Sebastien Loeb has secured maximum World Rally Championship points on Rallye Monte-Carlo by securing three bonus points with victory on the event-closing Power Stage in his Citroen DS3 WRC.

Loeb took 3m27.8s to complete the challenging stage with team-mate Mikko Hirvonen second fastest, 1.2s slower than Loeb, to bag two bonus points. M-Sport Ford Fiesta driver Evgeny Novikov rounded out at an impressive Rallye Monte-Carlo debut with his first Power Stage point in third.

Ford driver Petter Solberg’s outright pace was restricted having to run three used winter tyres and one winter tyre. Nevertheless he made it through to secure third overall.

Pierre Campana completed the tight and twisty test, held in dry and mild conditions, with a small powersteering problem on his factory MINI. He was ninth fastest as a result, 10.1s down on Loeb.

Czech Martin Prokop fended off MINI privateer Armindo Araujo in the battle for ninth place overall in his Fiesta by going three seconds faster than the Portuguese through the stage. Prokop was fifth quickest, 4.4s adrift of stage winner Loeb’s pace.

Francois Delecour, who finished sixth overall, handed driving duties to co-driver Dominique Savignoni for the stage to mark Savignoni’s retirement from the sport. Savignoni’s time was 52.2s slower than the fastest run

OGIER DRIVING FOR VOLKSWAGEN 2013:

Sebastien Ogier will be a Volkswagen driver when the German manufacturer makes its World Rally Championship debut in 2013.

The 27-year-old from France (above right), who severed his ties with Citroen last week, will spend next season developing the firm’s Polo R WRC alongside co-driver Julien Ingrassia (left) after a signing a long-term contract.

“Volkswagen is the number one in Europe and will soon be number one in the world,” said Ogier. “I’m sure that they’re going to compete with the goal of clinching the WRC title. And I’m happy to be part of this from the outset.”

“I am very happy about Sebastian Ogier and Julien Ingrassia joining us,” said Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management for the Development Division. “Both of them are important pieces of the puzzle on our way towards building a successful team in the World Rally Championship. It is also a mark of confidence for our team if such a strong pairing opts for a new team in the WRC that is still in the process of being developed.”

Volkwagen Motorsport boss Kris Nissen addd: “We are proud that such a successful and quick duo as Sebastian and Julien have decided to join Volkswagen. The aim of putting a competitive Polo R WRC on the road for them as quickly as possible will additionally drive our team. We look forward to working with them and are hoping for many victories and titles in the future.”

Ogier will perform his first public duty as a Volkswagen driver when he takes part in the Race of Champions event in Dusseldorf from 3/4 December.

WRC UPDATE NEWS: Latvala deserves to win rally GB

Latvala was in a close battle for top spot with world champion Sebastien Loeb before the Citroen driver retired on the road section heading to Sunday’s second stage when he suffered a head-on collision with a motorist, fortunately without injury to the occupants of either vehicle.

Loeb’s exit, the result of damage to the radiator of his DS3 WRC, means Latvala will take a lead of 3m19.5s into Sunday’s final three stages, the first of which, Halfway 2, begins at 10:36hrs local time.

“Jari-Matti was really up for it this morning and you could tell from Seb’s voice [after stage 18] that he was trying everything,” said Wilson. “It was shaping up to be an incredible fight and it would be great for Jari-Matti if he could get the win. Certainly there’s nobody that deserves the victory more than Jari-Matti after the season he’s had.”

Ford is currently on course for a podium lockout with Mads Ostberg and Henning Solberg second and third respectively in their M-Sport Stobart Fiestas. However, Solberg is coming under mounting pressure from MINI driver Kris Meeke in the battle for the final podium spot.
